As a special activity, each school in the Dancing Classrooms program has the option to participate in a city-wide team match, the Colors of the Rainbow. At the close of each course, students audition to participate, with twelve students advancing to the competition. The schools are identified by colors, with ladies wearing colored sashes and the gentlemen wearing colored cards pinned to their backs.

The event includes several rounds of competition, with run-offs in each of the boroughs. As seen in the documentary film ‘Mad Hot Ballroom’, the match culminates with a grand final in which the final winner is chosen.
